What is balayage?
Balayage is a freehand colouring technique that creates soft, natural-looking highlights throughout the hair. Unlike traditional foils, balayage is painted onto the hair to achieve a seamless blend with no harsh lines, giving a more lived-in, low-maintenance result.
This makes balayage one of the most popular colour services for clients looking for long-lasting, dimensional colour without frequent upkeep.
Not sure whether balayage or highlights will suit you best? Ask us when you book, or at the start of your appointment.
Which colour service should you choose?
All three lighten or change the colour, but they are applied differently and they grow out differently, which is usually what decides it.
| Compared on | Balayage | Highlights | Global colour |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | Painted on freehand, with no foils, for a seamless blend and no harsh lines. | Sections of hair lightened, traditionally using foils, to add brightness and dimension. | Colour applied all over, giving rich, even tone from root to tip. |
| The finish | Soft, blended dimension with a natural, lived-in grow-out. | Brightness and dimension through the hair. | Even, all-over coverage, including grey coverage. |
| How it grows out | Softly. The regrowth is less noticeable, so it stays wearable for longer. | More noticeably than balayage, so it needs refreshing sooner. | A regrowth colour keeps the roots looking fresh between full appointments. |
| Typical upkeep | Three to six months before a refresh. | Six to ten weeks. | Most clients return every six to ten weeks for maintenance or toning. |
| Price at Therapy | Partial £170. Full Custom £195. | T Section £130. Half Head £145. Full Head £170. | Regrowth £105. Root to End £120. |
All colour services include a professional blow dry and finish, and all require a patch test at least 48 hours beforehand. To include a cut, please add £30.

When balayage is not the right choice
Balayage suits most people who want dimension with a soft grow-out, but it is not the right service in every case, and sometimes another colour service will get you closer to what you want.
Please talk to us before booking if:
- You cannot have a patch test at least 48 hours before your appointment
- Your hair has previous colour that needs correcting
- You want even, all-over coverage or grey coverage, which is what global colour is for
- You want brightness and dimension through the hair rather than a soft grow-out, which is what highlights are for
A patch test is quick and free of charge, but it has to be done at least 48 hours beforehand and cannot be done on the day. We reserve the right to refuse colour or tint services without a valid one, so please book yours in good time.
If your hair has previous colour to correct, tell us when you book. Colour correction is not something we can price accurately without seeing your hair, so we would rather look at it first than quote you a figure we cannot stand behind.

FAQs
Balayage FAQs
Balayage is a freehand hair colouring technique that creates soft, natural-looking highlights. The colour is painted onto the hair to give a seamless, sun-kissed finish with no harsh lines.
Unlike traditional highlights, balayage is applied freehand rather than using foils. This creates a softer, more blended result with a more natural grow-out and less maintenance.
Balayage is a low-maintenance colour that can last 3–6 months. Because the colour is blended, regrowth is softer and less noticeable compared to traditional highlights.
Partial Balayage is £170 and Full Custom Balayage is £195. Tell us the result you want when you book and we can confirm which of the two suits your hair.
You're welcome to discuss the result you want when you book, and again with your stylist at the start of your appointment, so we understand your hair and your goals before any colour goes on.
Balayage can be tailored to suit most hair types, colours and lengths. Whether you want a subtle, natural look or a brighter transformation, we customise the technique to you.
Our experienced stylists use professional products and techniques to protect the condition of your hair. We also recommend aftercare to maintain strength, shine and colour.
A balayage appointment typically takes between 2 to 4 hours depending on the complexity of the colour and your hair type.
To keep your balayage looking its best, we recommend:
- Using professional colour-safe products
- Regular toning appointments
- Occasional glossing to refresh the colour
Absolutely. Every balayage service is fully tailored to your skin tone, hair type and desired finish, whether you prefer soft and subtle or bold and bright.
