What is BIAB?

BIAB stands for Builder In A Bottle, a soak-off builder gel applied as a strengthening overlay over your natural nail. It adds structure and protection while keeping a slim, natural finish, rather than the thicker, more artificial look of some other systems.

It's become one of the most sought-after nail treatments, prized for combining real durability with a healthy, low-maintenance look.

BIAB can also be finished with bespoke nail art.

How is BIAB different from gel polish and acrylic?

Gel polish adds colour and shine but little strength. BIAB goes further, building a protective layer that supports the natural nail and helps it grow, which is why it lasts noticeably longer and resists chipping.

Compared with acrylic, BIAB is lighter and more flexible, and it's soaked off rather than filed or drilled away, making it a gentler choice for your natural nails over time.

Which should you choose?

The three get talked about as if they were interchangeable, but they behave quite differently on the nail.

When BIAB is not the right choice

BIAB suits most people who want strength and a natural finish, but it is a cosmetic treatment rather than a medical one, and there are times we would ask you to wait.

Please talk to us before booking if you have:

  • A suspected fungal nail infection
  • Broken, bleeding or inflamed skin around the nail
  • Significant pain, heat or swelling
  • Pus or another sign of infection
  • A nail that has changed colour, thickness or shape
  • A previous reaction to artificial nail products

Covering a nail with gel does not treat the underlying problem and can make changes harder to spot, so we would rather you spoke to a pharmacist, GP or podiatrist first and came to us afterwards.

BIAB is also not the answer if you want dramatic length. It is a strengthening overlay rather than an extension system, so if length is the priority, say so when you book and we will talk it through.

Good to know

Before your appointment

Please let us know when booking if you'd like nail art, so we can allow enough time in your appointment.

We do not remove or infill nail products applied by other salons. Please ensure existing products are removed by the original salon before your appointment.

We'd always recommend having BIAB removed professionally rather than picking it off.
